LA BioMed Names Six New Board Members

LOS ANGELES – (August 15, 2014) – Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute (LA BioMed) recently named six new members to its Board of Directors, expanding the board’s expertise in the law, scientific research, engineering, development, public affairs and more.

David B. Duthu, Dr. David Heber, Joan Hood Jones, Anne-Merelie Murrell, Barnet Resnick and Dan Rosenfeld have joined the board of LA BioMed, one of the nation’s leading nonprofit independent research institutes.

“We are fortunate to have such distinguished members of the community willing to dedicate their time to the governance and growth of LA BioMed,” said Steven A. Nissen, LA BioMed Board of Directors chairman.
“Each of the new board members has achieved substantial success in their own careers, and their contributions to LA BioMed are greatly appreciated.”

Following is additional information about each of the new board members:

David B. Duthu, PE
Duthu is a founding principal of ccrd, a consulting engineering firm located in 10 cities in the U.S. He brings more than 40 years of experience in the fields of mechanical engineering design, technical engineering design and project management. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, he serves as the principal-in-charge of numerous projects across the U.S.

Duthu also directs science and technology efforts on behalf of ccrd with specific experience in biocontainment, chemical and physics research laboratories, as well as vibration analysis and asset management.

David Heber, MD, PhD, FACP, FACN
Dr. Heber is an LA BioMed Legend and the first chief of the Division of Clinical Nutrition at the Center for Health Sciences. He also serves as a UCLA professor of medicine and public health, the founding chief of the Division of Clinical Nutrition in the Department of Medicine and the founding director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition.

Dr. Heber is a past director of the American Board of Nutrition and past chair of the Education Committee of the American Society of Clinical Nutrition.

Joan Hood Jones
A longtime Manhattan Beach resident, Jones previously served on the Manhattan Beach City Council and was the city’s mayor from 1997 to 1998. She also worked as an attorney with the law firms of Latham & Watkins and Burkely, Moore, Greenberg & Lyman.

Jones has served on the Stanford Law School Board of Visitors, Goucher College Board of Trustees, Manhattan Beach Education Foundation, South Bay Free Clinic and Mira Costa High School PTA. She founded the organization, Tools to Talent.

Anne-Merelie Murrell
Since 1991, Murrell has been president of Giroux Glass Company, Inc. She received the LA BioMed Spirit of Excellence Award for Inspirational Leadership in 2010.

Murrell was the youngest president of the UCLA Medical Center Auxiliary, a support group of more than 1,000 volunteers that provides financial aid and assistance to patients and their families. She conceived of and directed the founding of the UCLA Medical Thrift Shop, which has contributed close to $6 million to the hospital over the years.

Barnet Resnick
Resnick is a founding partner of Vogt, Resnick & Sherak law firm. For more than 35 years, his practice has centered primarily on business/tax planning, business transactions and tax controversies.

Resnick also served as an elected trustee of California’s second largest Community College District. He has been an associate professor at California State University, Long Beach; an instructor for the University of California, Irvine’s Certified Financial Planning Certificate Program, and an instructor at the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Dan Rosenfeld
Rosenfeld is a co-founder of Urban Partners, which has developed prominent downtown Los Angeles projects, including the CalTrans headquarters and the 1,600-bed student housing complex, University Gateway.

Previously, Rosenfeld served as Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas’ senior deputy for economic development and as director of real estate for the State of California and City of Los Angeles. In addition, he has served as a senior officer with The Cadillac Fairview Corporation, Tishman-Speyer Properties, Kilroy Industries and Jones Lang LaSalle.
