Genomic studies of heart diseases; medical genetics

Research Description

Since 2014, Dr. Lin's research has been within the Institute for Translational Genomics and Population Sciences -- mainly on genetics of heart rhythm conditions, including long QT syndrome, atrial fibrillation, and electrocardiographic traits (e.g., heart rate, PR, QRS, QT, and ectopy). In another area, Drs. Lin and Ruey-Kang Chang finished a clinical study of newborn screening for long QT syndrome by use of a one-piece ECG electrode strip and compact ECG recorder -- both invented by Dr. Chang and colleagues for newborns. A manuscript on use of the novel ECG system by parents on their own babies will be submitted soon (covering 2,582 newborns). The papers will include the first genome-wide association study of ECG traits in normal newborns and the first newborn screening study of long QT syndrome in the United States.

Past research focused on factors that may play a role in the prevention of intestinal tumors, as in hereditary polyposis or colon cancer. His lab has studied the role of prostaglandin D2 as a tumor preventing molecule. Other activities cover genetic disorders, including malformation syndromes and inborn errors of metabolism.
