Eli K Ipp, MD
Professor of Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA
Head of the Section of Diabetes and Metabolism, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center
Physiology of hormone secretion; Diabetes
Research DescriptionDr. Ipp's primary research interest is the physiology of hormone secretion in the islets of Langerhans and its relationship to the development of diabetes and its complications. One focus of this effort is work at a basic and clinical level on oscillatory phenomena involved in the secretion of insulin and the regulation of carbohydrate metabolism. Another is the study of islet dysfunction in subjects at-risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus and applying genetic approaches to identify these individuals. Dr. Ipp's research includes clinical studies of prediabetes and diabetes, using methods to study insulin secretion and mathematical modeling of insulin sensitivity in vivo and genetic approaches to identify risk for diabetes. Recent studies have focused on diabetic retinopathy and the role of beta cell dysfunction and inflammation in this common complication of diabetes. Another area of interest is the development of methods for improving health care delivery in the area of diabetes management.
